We are pleased to announce the results of the competition of the bookplate organised by The Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS in Cracow in Kraków. The selection process was extremely challenging, with lengthy discussions and excellent arguments put forward. We would like to thank and congratulate all the prize winners and participants. We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition of competition entries on 18 November 2026 at 1:00 p.m.
Following lively deliberations and several rounds of voting, the competition jury, comprising:
- Agnieszka Fluda-Krokos, PhD – Director of the Library – Chair of the Jury,
- Monika Graczyk – Deputy Director of the Library – Secretary of the Jury,
- Lucyna Jaworska – Head of the Acquisitions Department,
- Małgorzata Turczak – Head of the Cataloguing Department,
- Bartłomiej Stempin – Head of the Circulation Department,
- Łukasz Łukawski – Head of the Special Collections,
- Magdalena Adamska – Head of the Print Room,
- Fryderyk Kądziela – Staff member of the Print Room
has announced the following results:
- First Prize – Piotr Felszyński – „A Monogram with a Story Behind It” – for its minimalism and the way it combines abbreviations of the names of the two institutions in a single design,
- Second Prize – Robert Gaweł – „Under One Roof” – for a title that reflects the history of the Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS, and for placing a sun above the building at the centre of the design, symbolising the library as the centre of the world of science,
- Third Prize – Zbigniew Osenkowski – „Ex Libris of the Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS in Kraków” – for his classical approach to ex libris design, the inclusion of Kraków-related elements in the design, and the incorporation of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences logo into the graphic composition.
In addition, two entries received honourable mentions:
- Jarosław Temkin-Gołaszewski – „Ex Libris of the Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS” – for typographic ingenuity and masterful use of letterpress printing materials.,
- Ryszard Baloń – „Ex Libris of the Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS in Kraków” – for an exquisite interpretation of traditional library symbols.
Of the 43 entries submitted, four were disqualified before the judging stage because they failed to meet one of the competition rules: the Library's name appearing in the design was incorrect. Selecting the winners from the remaining entries proved exceptionally difficult, particularly in the final rounds, when the jury had to narrow the field from 11 entries (two designs had received the same number of votes) to five, and then to three. We would like to thank all participants for submitting their work.
The exhibition opening will take place on Wednesday, 18 November, at 1:00 p.m. at the Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS in Kraków. All entries admitted to the competition will be presented in the post-competition exhibition and published in the accompanying catalogue.
